Canvas Crab

Nick Thomas
Warm saltwater fly
Easy
  1. Run on the thread at the hook eye and remove the tag end. Secure the end of the plastic canvas strip with cross wraps leaving a small space behind the eye.
  2. Tie in the eyes along the front of the shank and add superglue to the thread wraps to secure the eye stalks in place.
  3. Tie in four strands of sili legs by the middle between the eyes. Wind the thread to the end of the straight shank and make a whip finish.
  4. Remove the hook from the vise, push the free end of the plastic canvas over the point and up onto the shank. Secure with some thread wraps finishing at the rear of the looped plastic.
  5. Tie in a length of yarn and then take the thread forward to behind the hook eye.
  6. Wind the yarn around the hook and the plastic skeleton making a series of wraps at different angles until the body is formed.
  7. Tie in the yarn at the hook eye, trim off the waste, whip finish and varnish the thread wraps.
  8. Apply some thin superglue along the back of the body and allow it to soak in. Don’t use too much, just enough to bond the yarn wraps to the skeleton.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
